Snow Crews Navigating Historic Winter Storm
Over the past week, our community has faced unprecedented winter weather challenges. The storm, "Blair," brought approximately 12 inches of snow, sleet, and ice, making it the fourth-largest single-day snowfall in recorded history and possibly the heaviest in three decades.
Our dedicated snow crew, along with other essential staff, worked tirelessly through hazardous conditions to ensure roads were as safe and clear as possible and city facilities remained operational. We extend our deepest gratitude to these individuals for their hard work and unwavering commitment. Here’s what it’s taken so far to keep Grain Valley running:
-
466 labor hours worked during this storm.
-
4 plow trucks running non-stop to maintain road safety.
-
265 tons of salt and 1,300 gallons of calcium chloride applied to treat roads.
Despite these efforts, the combination of freezing temperatures, limited visibility, and unprecedented snow volume has presented significant challenges. Curb-to-curb plowing has been nearly impossible due to the sheer quantity of snow and the limited space available for snow placement.
How You Can Help
As we continue cleanup efforts and prepare for additional snowfall, we’re asking for your patience, cooperation, and assistance:
-
Clear your sidewalks and shovel around your mailbox to assist USPS deliveries and ensure kids’ safety when school resumes.
-
Avoid pushing shoveled snow back into the street. This hinders our ability to clear roads effectively.
-
Remind children to stay off snow piles near roads. Plow trucks may return, and limited visibility can make this dangerous.
-
Be patient with residential street plowing. Main roads are prioritized, but our crews are working around the clock to reach every neighborhood.
If you have specific concerns, please call our snow hotline: (816) 847-0091. Stay safe, Grain Valley, and know that our teams will continue to work around the clock to support you. We are proud to serve this community!
