Summary
Collaborates on site with school administration and staff to investigate crime on school property, incorporate Law Enforcement Related Education and Safety into the school curriculum and enhance communication through the school setting. Assignment is to any Grain Valley School District facility. Performs various community service activities related to crime prevention, public relations, and public education.
Essential Functions
Law Enforcement Related Education Activities (“LERE”)
- Teaches K-12 curriculum for LERE and Safety
- Coordinates with teachers and school administration regarding scheduling for the curriculum and completion of the LERE course
- Develops stronger relationships through LERE curriculum and interactions with students, parents, school administration, DFS, and others
- Develops outlines for LERE courses and presents to classes upon requests
- Receives and maintains Drug Abuse Resistance Education (“DARE”) certification (if required)
- Manages the DARE program requirements (if required)
- Report DARE statistics to Jackson County COMBAT and the Missouri Police Chiefs Association “MPCA”
Crime Prevention Activities
- Responsible for developing and implementing a variety of crime prevention, safety, and community relations programs for the Police Department
- Utilizes and coordinates community programs including Business Safety, Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (“CPTED”), Neighborhood Watch, Workplace Violence Education, and Crime Prevention Education Services
- Evaluates and implements new curriculum on current programs when necessary
- Prepares and conducts oral presentations and briefings for various audiences
Patrol Related Activities
Incident/Accident Activities
- Patrol school grounds and buildings, conduct security checks, make regular contact with school administration, staff, and students
- Responds appropriately to incident/accident assuring that department procedures are followed
- Completes and submits reports to the operations Captain, as required
- Requests emergency, social services, or other services, as needed
Mediation/Problem Solving Call Activities
- Receives notification of an issue and investigates as required assuring for professionalism and coordination with the Division of Family Services, school administration and parents
- Completes the required documentation as necessary
Offense Calls
- Responds to reported incident, makes a determination regarding the emergency or non-emergency nature of incident, and coordinates with other units, if needed
- Takes appropriate enforcement or control action as required assuring that department and school procedures are followed, and that safety is prioritized
- Completes investigation, makes determination regarding enforcement action required and completes reports and documentation as required assuring for timeliness and accuracy
- If needed, makes arrest, handles prisoners assuring for officer and public safety, and assuring that school, juvenile office, and department procedures are followed
- Conducts and completes any required follow-up activities
Other Activities
- Searches for subjects with warrants and makes arrests, if needed
- Patrols the school campuses by foot and vehicle
- Responds to requests for assistance from other agencies adhering to school and department policies and procedures
- Performs Traditional Patrol in the City to prevent crime and initiates contact with individuals who are engaging in criminal activity or safety or traffic hazards that arise
- Follows City-wide safety policy and practices and adheres to responsibilities concerning safety prevention, reporting, and monitoring as outlined in the City’s Safety Handbook
- Is available for occasional calls while off-duty regarding school related emergencies, threats, and threat assessments that may require follow-up or preparation for the next school day
- Performs all other duties as assigned

Essential Knowledge, Experience, and Ability
Minimum Qualifications
- At least twenty-one (21) years of age at the time of employment
- High school diploma
- Missouri Class A POST Certification
- A valid Missouri driver’s license or be able to obtain before appointment
- Two (2) years’ experience in law enforcement
Preferred Qualifications
- Completed forty (40) hour Basic School Resource Officer Certification
- Completed eighty (80) hour DARE Core Training (if required)
- Three (3) to five (5) years law enforcement experience
- Associates degree or higher in Criminal Justice
